Today is #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving and charitable activity to support the nonprofit organizations that sustain and enrich communities across the country. The event, in its second year, is an initiative to kick off the holiday giving season in the wake of shopping-centered Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Started by New York-based 92nd Street Y, the movement has gone global, with participants from Canada, Mexico, Singapore, and Australia. Thousands of organizations and individuals are expected to participate by donating time, money, or services to a wide range of charities. According to the #GivingTuesday website, last year “Blackbaud processed over $10 million in online donations,” with donations up 53% from the previous Tuesday after Thanksgiving – and the results are expected to be even more impressive this year.

The initiative highlights the unique role of charitable giving as a valued American tradition and underscores the need to ensure an environment that encourages giving to support thriving communities. The Charitable Giving Coalition is dedicated to fighting hard to preserve the charitable tax deduction – and you can too, by signing and sharing our petition to let lawmakers know how vital charities are to you!
