230 Economists to Congress: Preserve the Charitable Deduction

Today, POLITICO featured an Open Letter from Economists on the Charitable Deduction who emphasize the unique value of the charitable deduction in our society. This century-old tax incentive encourages giving to support worthy community services.  Elected officials in Washington, D.C. are considering tampering with the charitable deduction. Such a move would have devastating consequences for nonprofits and millions of people who rely on the services supported through charitable giving. These economists, as well as charitable organizations, nonprofits, foundations and others are working to make sure there is a clear understanding about what is at stake should lawmakers reduce the value of the charitable deduction.
