The thoughts of the Charitable Giving Coalition’s members remain with those suffering from the devastation of super Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda). The storm, one of the strongest ever recorded, has caused widespread destruction and loss of life in the Philippines, with thousands feared dead and cities entirely flattened. The charitable sector is stepping up to support those affected by this disaster, with several Coalition members providing aid:
- The Jewish Federations of North America are supporting the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is fundraising for relief efforts. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Filipino people suffering from this terrible storm’s unimaginable destruction,” said Cheryl Fishbein, chair of JFNA’s Emergency Committee. Donations can be made on their online relief page or sent by mail to Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund, The Jewish Federations of North America, Wall Street Station, PO Box 148, New York, NY 10268.
- Catholic Relief Services has planned to provide emergency shelter, water supply and hygiene, and non-food-item kits for 32,000 families, as well as 3,167 latrines, 48 bathing cubicles, 208 water tanks, 300 waste disposal bins, and 45,000 person-days of Cash-for-Work community clean-up and debris removal. To find out more about their relief efforts and contribute a donation, visit their website.
- The American Red Cross has sent disaster relief specialists to assist their Philippine chapter in their efforts. They plan to deploy telecommunication specialists with a satellite system soon, as communication remains limited in hard-hit communities. The Red Cross’s family tracing services have also been activated. To donate to their relief efforts, visit their Typhoon Appeal website.
- “The Salvation Army is on the ground serving the immediate needs of survivors,” said Major Ron Busroe, The Salvation Army’s National Community Relations and Development Secretary. “Donations from the generous public will help provide basic necessities that survivors desperately need right now. But the effects of this tragedy will be felt for months – even years. We know that emotional and spiritual counseling is equally important for survivors to deal with the gravity of the situation.” To support their efforts, visit their donation site.
- ECFA has provided a list of ECFA-accredited organizations that are providing relief services.
CNN and NBC have lists of other ways you can help support the relief efforts. We will continue to update this list of collective efforts as we learn of them.
